In theory, each link to your site from an independent, third-party website is analogous to a ‘vote’. For example, when a website points a link to your website which contains the keywords “vending equipment” it’s as if this webmaster is saying “this site gets my vote as a site that is relevant to the subject of vending equipment”. Getting a lot of these types of links is like getting a lot of votes. Eventually, a ‘profile’ begins to emerge as more and more sites link to your site with certain keywords. Google sees this profile and makes a determination as to how relevant your site is to various keywords.
